In 2024 alone, consumers reported losing a staggering $470 million to scams that began with a simple text message, according to new data from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). That’s five times more than what was reported in 2020 – even though fewer people filed reports. It’s a clear sign that scammers are getting sneakier and more convincing.

Some of the most common scam texts include:

  • Fake package delivery alerts asking you to click a link or “resolve” an issue.
  • Bogus job offers that require you to complete online tasks – and eventually invest your own money.
  • Phony bank or fraud alerts, designed to trick you into revealing sensitive information.
  • Fake unpaid toll notices with a link to “pay now.”
  • “Wrong number” texts that turn flirty fast and may lead to shady investment pitches.
