We were honored to join in on World Cultures Day at South Portland Middle School for the second year in a row – and what a day it was! As we walked into the building that morning, we were greeted by the beautiful, haunting sound of the Uilleann pipes being played in the entryway. It was a moving and memorable start to a day dedicated to music, movement, and meaningful cultural exchange.
Students spent the day exploring traditions from around the globe, with over 70 visitors and volunteers leading interactive workshops on everything from mandala making, drumming, and dance to baking challah, practicing yoga, and trying out rugby and karate. The entire school was transformed into a vibrant, global classroom.
Our team spent the morning in the cafeteria, helping hand out some of the incredible food donated by families, local restaurants, and community members. It was a joy to connect with students as they made their way through the line – and we even learned a few things ourselves. One student kindly corrected us when we called them African donuts: “They’re called Puff Puffs!” Other delicious offerings included pierogis, shoo fly pie, chicken and plantains, and so much more.
World Cultures Day is a powerful reminder of how diversity and community come together to create something truly special. We’re grateful to be part of this meaningful celebration and are already looking forward to next year!
